If you’re a salaried employee, chances are you’ve received a document called Form 16 from your employer around tax filing season. But what exactly is Form 16, and why is it important?
In this article, we’ll decode what is Form 16, how it helps in filing your ITR, and how it reflects your salary breakup & TDS deductions. We’ll also touch on Form 16A, and how to use both forms while e-filing your return.
What is Form 16?
Form 16 is a TDS certificate issued by the employer to an employee. It acts as proof that the employer has deducted tax at source (TDS) from your salary & deposited it with the Income Tax Department.
Simply put, Form 16/16A is the certificate of deduction of tax at source.
It’s a crucial document while filing your Income Tax Return (ITR), as it contains:
- Income details (salary)
- TDS details (tax deducted)
- Deductions claimed (80C, 80D, HRA, etc.)
- PAN and TAN of employer & employee
🧾 Components of Form 16
Form 16 is split into two parts:
✅ Part A – TDS Details
- PAN of employee and TAN of employer
- Period of employment
- Summary of TDS deducted and deposited quarterly
- Assessment year
✅ Part B – Salary and Deduction Breakup
- Form 16 is a certificate that denotes the fine breakup of salary income
- Gross salary and exemptions (HRA, LTA, etc.)
- Deductions under Chapter VI-A (80C, 80D, etc.)
- Taxable income & total tax payable
- Relief under Section 89 (if applicable)
Both parts are essential for accurate ITR filing.
What is Form 16A?
While Form 16 applies to salary income, Form 16A is a certificate for tax deducted at source from other income sources like:
- Fixed Deposit (FD) interest
- Professional fees (for freelancers)
- Rent payments
- Commission income
So, if you’re a consultant or have FD income with TDS deducted, Form 16A will be issued by the payer (like the bank or client).
