No More Renewals: Insurance Intermediaries Get Lifetime Registration Now

What Has Changed?

IRDAI has formally moved to a perpetual registration model for insurance intermediaries.

This means:

  • No more 3-year renewal cycle
  • Registration will now remain valid indefinitely
  • Applies to brokers, agents, and corporate agents

Insurance intermediaries will now remain valid subject to payment of annual fees and continued compliance.

When Did This Come Into Effect?

This is not a future proposal.

It is already active.

Effective February 5, 2026, the IRDAI transitioned insurance intermediaries to a perpetual registration model under the Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha (Amendment of Insurance Laws) Act, 2025.

This marks a structural shift in how licensing works.

What Happens to Renewal Now?

This is the biggest relief.

Earlier:

  • Registration had to be renewed every 3 years
  • Failure to renew could disrupt operations

Now:

Intermediaries no longer require 3-year renewals as Certificates of Registration (CoR) remain valid indefinitely.

That entire cycle is gone.

What Replaces the Renewal System?

Renewal is replaced with a simpler mechanism.

Compliance is now maintained through the payment of an annual fee and continued adherence to regulatory standards.

So instead of a heavy renewal process:

  • Annual fee payment becomes the key requirement
  • Ongoing compliance remains mandatory

Who Benefits from This Change?

This applies across the board.

  • Insurance Brokers
  • Individual agents
  • Corporate agents

The registration of insurance intermediaries becomes simpler, faster, and more stable.

Why This Change Matters

This is not just about convenience.

It affects:

  • Business continuity
  • Compliance burden
  • Operational efficiency

Removing renewal reduces friction.

And that matters in regulated sectors.

What Still Remains Important

Even with perpetual registration:

  • Compliance standards still apply
  • Annual fee payment is mandatory
  • Regulatory oversight continues

Registration may be perpetual now, but responsibility is not reduced.

Final Thought

This is a clear shift.

From periodic renewal… to continuous validity.

From heavy processes… to streamlined compliance.

Perpetual now — but disciplined always.
