How to Refile Your Income Tax Return (ITR)?

How to Refile or Revise Your Income Tax Return (ITR) Online in India?
Step-by-Step Guide for FY 2024–25 | AY 2025–26

If you've already filed your Income Tax Return (ITR) but realized there's an error or omission, don't worry. The Income Tax Department allows taxpayers to revise their returns under Section 139(5) of the Income Tax Act. Here's how you can refile or revise your ITR online:

✅ When Can You Revise Your ITR?

You can revise your ITR if:

  • You've made a mistake in the original return (e.g., incorrect income details, missed deductions).
  • You've received updated Form 16 or other income statements after filing.
  • You need to change your tax regime selection (from old to new or vice versa).

Note: The revised return must be filed before the end of the relevant assessment year or before the completion of the assessment, whichever is earlier.

🧾 Step-by-Step Guide to Revising Your ITR

  1. Log in to the Income Tax e-Filing Portal
  • Visit https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/.
  • Enter your PAN (User ID), password, and captcha code to log in.
  1. Navigate to 'e-File' > 'Income Tax Returns' > 'File Income Tax Return'
  • On your dashboard, click on the 'e-File' menu.
  • Select 'Income Tax Returns' and then 'File Income Tax Return'.
  1. Select the Assessment Year
  • Choose the appropriate Assessment Year (e.g., 2025–26 for FY 2024–25).
  1. Choose 'Revised Return' as the Filing Type
  • Under 'Filing Type', select 'Revised Return'.
  • Enter the Acknowledgment Number and Date of Filing of the original return.
  1. Select the Appropriate ITR Form
  • Choose the ITR form applicable to your income sources (e.g., ITR-1 for salaried individuals).
  1. Make Necessary Corrections
  • Review the pre-filled data and make necessary corrections or additions.
  • Ensure all income details, deductions, and tax payments are accurately entered.
  1. Validate and Submit
  • After making corrections, validate the information.
  • Submit the revised return.
  1. E-Verify the Revised Return
  • E-verification is mandatory. You can e-verify using:
    • Aadhaar OTP
    • Net Banking
    • Electronic Verification Code (EVC)
    • Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)

Note: If you cannot e-verify immediately, you can send a signed physical copy of the ITR-V acknowledgment to the Centralized Processing Center (CPC) in Bengaluru within 30 days.

📌 Important Points to Remember

  • Multiple Revisions: You can revise your return multiple times within the allowed time frame.
  • Acknowledgment Number: Always keep a record of the acknowledgment number of the original return, as it's required for filing a revised return.
  • Avoid Penalties: Ensure the revised return is filed within the stipulated time to avoid penalties.

✅ Final Thoughts
Revising your ITR is a straightforward process that allows you to correct any mistakes and ensure compliance with tax laws. It's always better to rectify errors proactively rather than face potential penalties later.
